Ask Anything: Salvation
Posted: May 06, 2008 by Matt
This week we continued in our Ask Anything series by looking at the question: How were people saved before Jesus? The question looked at whether God saved people in a different way in the Old Testament to the New Testamant. The answer is of course a resounding no. If we believe in a God who never changes then neither do his promises.

Book Recommendations
Here are some book recommendations. If you follow the link to amazon, you can use their ‘Look Inside’ facility to read selected excerpts from the books.
- God’s big picture – Vaughan Roberts (IVP) – Probably the best small book looking at how the whole Bible is about Jesus.
- From Creation to New Creation: Understanding the Bible Story – Tim Chester (Paternoster). One of the worst covers in the history of publishing, but a great book nonetheless. Traces the Bible’s storyline from the creation in Genesis 1 to the new creation in Revelation 21.
- The Message of the Old Testament: Promises Made – Mark Dever and Graeme Goldsworthy (Crossway books). A collection of modified sermons working through the Old Testament.
- The Goldsworthy Trilogy – Graheme Goldsworthy (IVP). The first book in this trilogy is called: Gospel and Kingdom. It’s a great introduction to how the Old Testament fits together and what it means. It’s bundled with two of his other books but it’s essential reading.
- According to plan – Graheme Goldsworthy (IVP). A more indepth version of Gospel and Kingdom. Well worth reading if you want to understand the Old Testament in a little more depth.
- Preaching the Whole Bible As Christian Scripture – Graheme Goldsworthy (Eerdmans). A great book for anyone teaching the Bible, showing how to preach the whole Bible as a Christian book.
- New Dictionary of Biblical Theology: Exploring the Unity & Diversity of Scripture – Rosner et al (IVP). If you’d like something a little more meaty buy this book. It’s a collection of articles from the perspective that the whole Bible is about Jesus.
- Jesus Storybook Bible: Every Story Whispers His Name – Sally Lloyd-Jones (Zondervan). A kids book for everyone. Brilliantly written, beautifully illustrated and brings the Bible to life. Again, this book sees the whole Bible as being about Jesus.
