News roundup

It was great to have Alasdair Kay with us on Sunday. Alasdair spoke on God’s love for the city. You can listen to Alasdair’s talk in the podcast section of our website even added an ‘in-page’ flash player to the podcasts section so that you don’t have to download the talk to listen to it now, you can just play whichever talk you want to listen to directly on the website. We’ve also added this player to the web resources section (good mp3 sermons on the web), so you can play other people’s sermons on our website too.On Sunday, Alasdair played a video of a song called: God of this city. The video was from YouTube so you can watch it again here:

You need a flash player to see this movie.

Another piece of news is that starting in September, we’re going to be starting a new series leading up to Christmas looking at the book of Genesis. ‘In the beginning God…‘ will be a brief overview of the whole book. Brief, because there are 50 chapters and we’re going to be taking 14 weeks to work through the main themes in the book. To get the most out of the series, it would be good to read Genesis at home. We won’t have time to cover every story so you may miss out on a lot if you don’t do a little bit of homework.

So what’s Genesis all about? The word Genesis means ‘beginning‘, named after chapter 1 verse 1, "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth". The whole book rests on the premise that almighty God has created the universe and everything in it, not through hard work but merely through words.

What do we learn from Genesis? We see the whole Bible in summary form: God creates, man rebels, God promises to restore. The promises aren’t fulfilled in Genesis, but the promises are made by a God who does not change and cannot break a promise. So when we look at Genesis we see the gospel in promise form; we see what Jesus will come to do in the future. There’s a great verse that sums up Genesis in chapter 3. After the fall God declares his word to the serpant, the devil: "And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel." Even though it looks like the devil has won the day, ultimately someone will come who will crush his head.

You can see the programme on the ‘What’s happening?’ section of the website. Also, here’s the flyer2:
